The Artas Folklore Center – Research And Documentation

Contributed by Artas Folklore Center on 10.04.2012:

An important part of the Artas Folklore Center is Research and Documentation. The Artas Folklore Center seeks to collect the huge body of work about its field which covers all aspects, and to build on earlier information, such as the collection of the genealogies and oral/family histories of its inhabitants. It regularly provides assistance to researchers, students, photographers, artists, filmakers and others, thus increasing the number of works available.A key goal is to use these works as the basis to create unique tourism projects.

Since April 2012, the Artas Folklore Center is fortunate to enjoy the services of Falestin Naili, Artas Folklore Center Scholar in Residence. She was joined in February 2014 by http:Rosanna Sirignano a promising young Italian Artas Scholar.

Thanks to the many scholars and others who have lived in and studied Artas, almost every aspect of the village has been studied. Here are a few recommendations for the general reader. (More academic sources are listed below.)

Though scholarly, the books of Hilma Grandvist (see below) are written with an immediacy and vividness which can be enjoyed by the interested general reader.

Grace Crowfoot’s From Cedar to Hyssop (see below) is delightful as is

Abdel Latif al Baghruti’s Folktales from Artas. (see below) To these we might add two works not mentioned below: Celia Rothenburg’s Spirits of Palestine: Gender, Society, and Stories of the Jinn, Lexington Books 2004, especially interesting for how the pressures and inner conflicts caused by the Occupation affect spirit possession. Divine Expectations: An American

Woman in 19th Century Palestine by Barbara Kreiger with Shalom Goldman (Ohio University Press offers a view of early British and American Christian efforts to support Jewish settlement in Palestine.

Artas is often mentioned in A View from Jerusalem 1849-1858, the Consular Diary of James and Elisabeth Anne Finn republished in 1980 with an introduction by Arnold Blumberg (Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press) This can be previewed/searched on Google Books at: http://books.google.com/books?id=lXGf39q2UDYC&dq=Finn,+James&source=gbs_summary_s&cad=0. There are also glimspses of Artas in Folklore of the Holy Land By J. E. Hanauer originally published in 1907.This can be downloaded from/read online at Googlebooks http://books.google.com/books?id=4t_1k1m_plUC&printsec=frontcover&dq=Hanauer,+Holy+Land&sig=ak6t5e0tEsJfw89zrkjPNe2w76sat: as well in as Domestic Life in Palestine By Mary Eliza Rogers (Poe & Hitchcock, 1865)which can be downloaded from/read online atGoogle Books at http://books.google.com/books?id=KG09qepFmJAC&dq=Brown+Domestic+Life+in+Palestine&source=gbs_summary_s&cad=0

In fact, a search at Google Books (Google>More>Even More>Books) will turn up quite a few books, though many of them seem to deal with those sharing the sentinments of missionaries/Christian supporters of Jewish settlement, rather than the village and its people. For the scholars among you, see below.

Hint: In searching for Artas, don’t overlook variants, such as Urtas or Irtas. Various diacritics are often added as well.
