Entrance to St. Gerasimus Monastery, or Deir Hogla near Jericho

Contributed by Leyla Zuaiter on 26.02.2006:

This monastery in the desert just outside Jericho is a good example of how many religious, social, historical, cultural and touristic and recreational aspects revolve around religious monuments in Palestine-and of course, lots of stories to go with them. Wax dolls under Painting of Madonna and Infant, St. Gerasimus Monastery or Deir Hogla, near Jericho

Contributed by Leyla Zuaiter on 26.02.2006:

Seen here is a ledge below the painting of the Madonna nursing the infant, where there are a few framed photos of children, for whom the Madonna’s intercession is sought for cures. If you look hard you will be able to make out some rather eerie wax dolls or body parts. These represent the ailing parts of the(...)

Should I study the architecture, the paintings, the stalls, the people or the plants? Such was my quandry on my trip to the monastery. About a third of the way into the courtyard was a kind(...)

At one time the desert was honeycombed with the caves, cells or monasteries of monk(...)
