Books on Palestinian art are rare, and those that have been published provide only scant information about a few Palestinian artists. Faten Nastas Mitwasi single-handedly changes this reality with her unique book, An Artist from Palestine: Sliman Mansour – Steadfastness and Creativity, which comprehensively delves into the life and works of one Palestinian artist.

Sliman Mansour ranks among the leading contemporary Palestinian artists and was a cofounder of the League of Palestinian Artists. “He is a highly creative and talented artist who lived through a changing history and experienced various circumstances, conditions and rules. He is a sensitive and clever artist. Through his creative art works, he was able to reflect the story of his people, to express their fears, pains and joys as well as represent their culture.” (An Artist from Palestine: Sliman Mansour, p. 38)

Ms. Mitwasi introduces the reader to the artist during his early childhood and documents his contribution to the Palestinian cultural scene. She explores Mansour’s vast collection of artwork, the fruit of more than 40 years, categorising each individual work and recounting the history behind each category. The artwork is presented in a catalogue section with more than 60 high-quality colour plates.

An Artist from Palestine: Sliman Mansour offers insight not only into Sliman Mansour and his artwork, but also into the history of Palestine, mainly after the 1967 Six-Day War, and the political and cultural contexts within which the Palestinian people lived.

Written in the Arabic language and translated into English and German, An Artist from Palestine, Sliman Mansour was published as a tri-lingual volume by the Michael Imhof Verlag publishing company. The project was made possible through the initiative and support of the Jerusalemsverein and Berliner Missionwerk in Germany and the International Center of Bethlehem (ICB) in Palestine.

Faten Nastas Mitwasi is a Palestinian artist from Bethlehem. She studied contemporary art at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Ms. Mitwasi was the art coordinator and curator at the ICB, where she organised numerous local and international art exhibitions. Currently she is the chairperson of the Visual Arts Department at Dar al-Kalima College in Bethlehem.

The book is available at Al Kahf gift shop in Bethlehem and www.amazon.de.
