Dear Friends of Palestine,
One of the spin-offs of www.palestine-family.net (PFN) is the development of new websites inspired by the same model. Here is an example. Four educational organizations in Palestine: Teacher Creativity Center, Early Childhood Resource Center, the Department of Education of Bethlehem University and the Arab Educational Institute (AEI-Open Windows) have recently jointly introduced an educational website for Palestine, www.Palestine-Education.Net (PEN)
This public site is modelled along the open-archive lines of Palestine-Family.net. PEN collects and shows educational material in Arabic and English which relate to education in Palestine for use in the Palestinian educational community, including NGOs, educators, teachers, university lecturers, students, parents, and youth organizations. The material will include a report on “good, bad and innovative” practices in Palestinian education (collected through a separate project made possible by Oxfam Novib). In addition, Palestine-education.net will feature quality entries on project narratives, manuals and other educational materials, both texts and photos.
New educational partners in Palestine will be able to directly upload their material themselves. An editorial committee will oversee the incoming items as to their appropriateness, basic quality and language use.
The initiators note the following advantages of the new site (which will sound familiar to users of PFN…):
The more the site is known and the more it grows in number and quality of entries, the larger the audience for its materials and the educational work done in Palestine. In other words, the site helps to make public and democratize the knowledge available among educational organizations in Palestine, and in the process shows in concrete and practical detail what is being done on the ground.
The site will be a resource which helps improve the quality of studying and teaching education in, for and about Palestine. Educational organizations in Palestine will be able to learn more about each other's work, and can also show their work to foreign visitors of the site.
Having set out the aims of the new site, we shouldn't want you to forget that www.palestine-family.net, too, contains excellent material for educational use!
For instance, consider the category “historical documents.” Several Palestinian teachers in civics or related fields have informed us that they use print-outs from PFN of things like old taxation documents or birth certificates from the British time to teach their students about daily life then. And PFN is used by students and teachers at schools and educational institutions abroad as a research tool on Palestinian life, history and culture, then and now.
The Internet thus allows the Palestinians to publish and inform, almost without restriction. Your family stories and information can be part of that, simply by uploading it to the site. Whether it is a song your grandmother sung you, a piece of a family tree, or your great-uncle's biography which was never published, Palestine-Family.net site is there to present it to the world for you. And for those of you who haven't submitted anything to the site yet: it is free and easy and even fun. Just log-on to the site (after registering, if you haven't already), go to the category where you want to submit something, and click on the "add to this category" link at the top right. The rest is self-explanatory.
By the way, if you haven't visited the site recently, you may have missed the wonderful new entries showing the recent Artas Lettuce Festival. Regardless of whether you attended or not, the pictures and accompanying reports give a vivid impression of the success, variety and importance of the festival.
